Chunciou Hotpot @ Jalan Klang Lama

When an eatery place uses the best ingredients, recipes and serves unlimited air-flown flow of meat and seafood to your table, you know it is truly going to be a satisfying Imperial's meal.

Chun Ciou Hotpot, helmed all the way from Taiwan is located along Jalan Klang Lama (aka Old Klang Road). For many who do not know how to read Chinese (e.g. bananas - like me), would most likely not realized or mistaken it as an industrial business rather than a majestic eatery place as the English signage is really small for passersby to catch.

Step inside the stand-alone two-storey building, you will be greeted by two human-sized Warrior statues. The interior is designed to replicate the historic elements of a Chinese palace with a modern touch to it.

SOUP BASE
The variety of soup-based offer is definitely going to surprise many Malaysians tastebuds.
  • Sukiyaki Soup*
  • Lakesalt Soup*
  • Tonkatsu Soup
  • Spicy Soup
  • Herbal Soup
  • Tonyam Soup
*highly recommended soup base

Sukiyaki Soup
When you have meat, you HAVE to cook them in Sukiyaki soup to further enhance the meat taste. However, the Sukiyaki soup is not recommended for drinking as it's sweet taste and "heat" may cause patrons to lose their voice for the day.

Lakesalt Soup
If you love to have a good bowl of soup after having a sumptuous meal, you should definitely go with the Lakesalt soup as the soup base before mixing it with the meat and seafood has a slight tinge of saltiness to it. Once mixed and boiled with the meat and balls, the soup becomes flavorful.

Tom Yam Soup
And if you love spicy soup base, do try out their Tom Yam soup as it has a really unique Tom Yam taste from our Malaysian and Thai version, who knows, it might just be your kind of spicy soup base.

SAUCES & CONDIMENTS
Go crazy with the sauces and condiments as there are over 10 types to pick for an enjoyable meal.
  • Thai chilli sauce*
  • Fruit sauce
  • Satay paste
  • Soy sauce
  • Sesame sauce
  • Bean curd sauce
  • Spring onion
  • Parsley
  • Garlic
  • Chopped chilli
  • Chun Ciou's signature sauce*
*highly recommended sauce

I personally dislike spring onion but I have to say Chun Ciou's Signature Sauce - a mixture of sesame sauce, spring onion, raw egg yolk and Shichimi powder is divine! Especially, when you dip the beef slices that was cooked with the Sukiyaki soup.

SELECTION OF MEAT AND SEAFOOD
Here's the main course of the party. The type of meat and steamboat ingredients for your imperial's feast is just majestic and unique. When you are feasting at Chun Ciou, be sure to order the Australian ribeye as it is the only dish that is served by the imperial guard.

Premium Meat
  • Australian Striploin*
  • Australian Ribeyes (served by an imperial guard)*
  • Lamb Shoulder Roll*
  • Pork Belly
  • Pork Shoulder
  • Chicken Fillet
  • Duck Roll
*highly recommended

Signature Meatballs (to name a few)
  • Wasabi ball
  • Black sesame mochi* (MUST TRY!)
  • Prawn ball*
  • Cuttlefish ball*
  • Cheese fish tofu
  • Taro fish ball
  • Pork tendon ball
  • Red heart ball*
*highly recommended

SIDE DISHES AND VEGETABLES
Aside from the big basket of vegetables, another side dish that you should definitely opt for when you are there is their Taiwanese Braised Pork Rice as it is the best complimentary to all the other ingredients.

DRINKS & DESSERTS
They have a wide selection of drinks to compliment your imperial meal; from soda beverages, Nestle's fruit tea selections, Nescafe's, to various types of tea.

And with the amount of food I had, I could not fill myself anymore with the desserts but if you can, help yourself to the dessert counter and enjoy their sweet lemon slices, red bean soup and ice cream.

PRICE

VERDICT
As the saying goes, "good things are meant to share". I will definitely head back to Chun Ciou Hotpot again with my friends and family because it is too good to not share it with my loved ones and that includes, you! The spacious, ancient imperial decor and array of food would definitely be the perfect place for an awesome group gathering, family night out and birthday party. In terms of pricing, trust me, it is totally worth the splurge!

Authentic Hong Kong Wonton Noodle @ Mak's Chee, 1 Utama

I grew up in a food heaven town, Ipoh where literally any bowl of noodles taste awesomely good. In other words, I grew up with a pretty picky taste buds.

I am sorry if I hurt any of your feelings but Kuala Lumpur/Selangor serves one of the worst bowls of wonton noodles. Ever since I left Ipoh, I rarely had a bowl of wonton noodle because the type of black sauce most hawker stalls used, the really oily soup, and the peanut size wontons always disappoints me. If the localized wonton noodles in KL is just as bad, what more can I say about the Hong Kong wonton noodle stalls in and around town.

Fortunately, I have found my wonton haven place, Mak's Chee Restaurant @ 1 Utama. They serve one of the best Hong Kong Wonton I have ever tried in town and back in my hometown. From the noodles, soup base to the full-size wonton. It was truly a humble bowl of noodle that was served at its most premium and finest quality.

Literally, hands down.

 Great place for single seaters.

MAK'S CHEE AUTHENTIC WONTON
Mak’s Chee Authentic Wonton was founded by Master Mak Woon Chee (Known as Chee) back in the 1920s in Guangzhou and it was one of the most famous noodle stalls across the city. Wonton noodles are well-known to be served with char siu but Chee believes that serving prawns wrapped with wonton skin is the way to go and he was right! Till date, prawn wontons are one of the most highly sought after options aside from the char siu served in Hong Kong restaurants.

MAK'S CHEE WONTON NOODLES
The soup was a clear broth boiled to perfection and as you sip it, the sweetness hits the taste buds at all the right spots. The noodles, they were fine like an angel's hair yet springy.

Prawn wonton lovers, this is THE place for a fresh and well-wrapped, goldfish-like prawn wonton. Juicy and filling to the max.

More of a meaty person? Well, beef lovers, you HAVE to try out their Beef Tendon Wonton Noodle. Because of the beef tendons, the flavor of the soup was enhanced tremendously.

They also have a dry base noodles served with dried prawn roe that comes with a slight tinge of spiciness. The overall taste is pretty unique as it is different from the conventional wonton noodles. If you are a roe lover, you should give this a try.

Disclaimer: picture shown above are not the original serving portion of the dry noodles

DEEP FRIED CHEESY WONTON
Now, to the most important part of this write-up, Mak's Chee recently revamped Hong Kong's goldfish-like wonton to Deep Fried Cheesy Wonton. This basket of deep fried cheesy wonton is stuffed with fresh sea prawns, mozzarella and cheddar cheese wrapped in wonton. This basket is the most flavorful yet sinful basket of wonton you can ever handle.

MUSCULAR CHAMPION MILK TEA
They even released their Hong Kong Milk Tea packed in a sexy muscular man. I love the Muscular Champion Milk Tea as the bitter-sweet flavor of the Ceylon tea was exquisite and aromatic. Sadly, to me, it wasn't the best drink option to have with or after an awesome bowl of clear broth wonton noodle as the Milk Tea somehow overshadows the aftertaste of the wonton soup.

I hate to break this to you but the Deep Fried Cheesy Wonton and Muscular Champion Milk Tea are only available from the 5th December 2016 till the 28th February 2017. So, try them out while they're still available or you'll regret it!

😈

SUMMARY
It was a meal beyond satisfaction as every food and drink served at this place were made to perfection. The price of a bowl of noodles is a little pricey as compared to hawker stalls but it is worth the money as their sauces and the ingredients used are premium quality and the servings are pretty generous. To top that off, most of the sauces and ingredients (especially for the soup ingredients) are imported from Hong Kong. I've tried it, I love it and I will definitely come back here again.

My partner-in-crime ;)

TAKE ME HOME
Love the taste of their sauces or the dried prawn roe? You can buy them home to enhance your home-cook food too.

Best Japanese Soft Serve Ice-cream @ P.S. Tokyo [Review]

As softserve ice-cream begins to be Malaysians top trending dessert of the year, P.S. Tokyo decides to bring you Japan's inspired soft-serve ice cream to tickle and satisfy your sweet-tooth.

The cafe recently open its doors to the public within the area of SS2. They are located at the same row as SS2's police station right above a DVD corner shop. The loud music played by the DVD shop might create the impression that the shop is going to be noisy but trust me, once you're in the cafe, be prepare to be awed by the simple, spacious, quiet and cozy concept =).

JAPANESE SOFTSERVE ICE-CREAM

Taken by Valerie @ valerieyanyan.blogspot.my
Well, as mentioned, their signature product is their Softserve Ice-Cream and who does not love a good Japanese flavor ice-cream to satisfy your sweet Japanese tooth, right? More so if the ice-cream has one of the richest flavoring I've ever tasted. It is so toothsome, sweet, smooth and milky that every lick of it had me feeling like I was on cloud nine! No kidding! The thought of it at this very moment while I am writing this post is already making me craving for it like nuts. The softserve ice-cream is available in three different flavors: Matcha, Hojicha and Milk. I personally love the Hojicha flavor as it has the roasted green tea taste which is exactly the same taste you get from a good cup of Hojicha. The soft-serve does comes with toppings but I like my ice-cream without toppings just the way it is =)

JAPANESE CHEESE CAKE

Among all the cakes that P.S. Tokyo serves, their cheese cake is my top favorite cake in store and around town, aside from Uncle Tetsu's Japanese Cheese Cake which is the bomb but P.S. Tokyo's Cheese Cake is just as good as it is. Though the appearance does not look as appetizing as Uncle Tetsu's, the texture is definitely still soft, fluffy and tasty!

ORIGINAL TOFU CHEESE CAKE

MUST TRY. If you are craving for a cheese cake but you  know that is just going to make you suffer a lot during gym time, you are going to love this cake. This cheese cake would make you think that you are consuming a less fattening cake as the cake is Tofu! Because of the ingredient use the cake's texture is extremely similar to a tofu and like every tofu's serve with sugar (either brown or white sugar), this comes with a ginger brown sugar sauce to give the extra "kick". When I first tried it, my taste buds could not stomach the ginger taste as I am no fan to ginger but I couldn't stop myself from taking one bite after another as the sweetness of the brown sugar and the softness of the tofu overshadows the sour-ish pungency that gingers emits. I would totally dig this cake as my top favorite if it wasn't for the slight ginger taste but I doubt the cake would be as addictive as it is if the ginger was minus off as gingers are known to enhance the food's flavoring.

SESAME TOFU CHEESE CAKE

Similar to Original Tofu Cheese Cake but minus off the white appearance and ginger brown sugar. This cake taste pretty decent and it is the perfect dessert for all sesame lovers and cheese cake lovers.

MATCHA MILK CAKE

Matcha fans should give this cake a try as the bottom crust of the cake just brings the matcha sensation to a whole new level.

JAPANESE BEVERAGE
All these Japanese feels and desserts would not be complete without the company of a Japanese beverage. Tea, coffee and soft drinks sold within the cafe are all imported from Japan. Their tea is available in three different premium Japanese tea flavors: Matcha (green tea), Hojicha (roasted green tea) and Genmaicha (rice green tea) while their coffee also comes in three different coffee level: Light, Mild, and Strong.

The cafe owners treasures the moments you spent in their cafe. So, what other better ways to encourage patrons to leave a trail of all their happy moments spent in their stores. Thus, they've created a area designated for photo printing. All you pro-photographers gotta do is:
1) snap pictures
2) hashtag (#pstokyo) on Instagram
3) wait for your pictures to be printed out from the designated printer
4) clip one copy onto their wall of memories.
5) bring home the other copy for safekeeping.

Menu and pricing list.

SUMMARY
I really love the desserts serve at the cafe so as the whole idea of a simple and slick design concept. It is a perfect place for beautiful Instagram photos. If only they had like a lounge area and WiFi access or else I would had made this place my stress-free work zone. Will definitely be visiting this shop again soon. In need of the Hojicha ice-cream!
